HOW TO PROPERLY DISPOSE OF AN AMERICAN FLAG

When an American flag becomes too faded or torn to fly, throwing it in the trash is not the correct way to dispose of it.

Here’s the proper, respectful method:

1. Take it to a veterans’ organization
Places like the American Legion or VFW collect old flags and retire them in official ceremonies.

2. Drop it off with Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts
They regularly perform respectful flag retirement ceremonies.

3. Attend a community retirement event
Many fire departments and civic groups accept worn flags.

4. Retire it yourself — respectfully
If no other option exists:

  • Fold the flag properly
  • Burn it in a safe, calm, dignified setting
  • Allow it to fully burn
  • Bury the ashes if you wish

Bottom line:
Never throw an American flag in the trash.
It should be retired with respect and dignity.
